Cambridge United right-back Liam Bennett joins League Two side Walsall on season long loan

Cambridge United right-back Liam Bennett has joined Walsall on a season long loan.

The 20-year-old, who penned a new two-year deal with the U’s last month, joins a side who finished 16th in League Two last term.

Bennett made ten appearances in all competitions for United last season, and had loan spells at Hemel Hempstead Town and Peterborough Sports in the first half of the campaign.

The defender’s latest loan deal includes an option to recall in January.

Head coach Mark Bonner said: “We are really pleased to have agreed for Liam to join Walsall, who approached us about this possibility very soon after the conclusion of last season.

“Following a positive end to the campaign, we believe this is an excellent opportunity for Liam to continue the progress he has made so far, and we are thrilled that the opportunity of playing League Two football is a possibility for one of our young players.

“Liam has a good challenge ahead of him to impress his new management team and teammates to try and secure as many on-field minutes as possible in what will be a really valuable part of his long term development.”
