In Search of True Beauty and Genuine Knowledge: The Life and Work of Nicholas Roerich by Dr Natalia Budanova (in Russian, with presentation slides in English)

Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) is widely recognised for his numerous mountain landscapes, with paintings housed in institutions such as the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York, the Roerich Estate in the Kullu Valley, India, and various private collections worldwide. However, his contributions extended far beyond his artistic endeavours. Roerich was a multifaceted individual—a writer, traveller, archaeologist, stage designer, philosopher, and public figure. He played a pivotal role in reviving ancient Russian crafts, participated in archaeological excavations, developed the philosophical doctrine of “Living Ethics,” and drafted the first international treaty for the protection of cultural property, known as the ‘Roerich Pact’. In her lecture, “In Search of True Beauty and Genuine Knowledge,” Dr Natalia Budanova delves into the biography and prolific career of this remarkable man.

​Dr Natalia Y. Budanova (PhD, Courtauld Institute of Art) is an art historian specializing in the art of the Silver Age, the early Russian avant-garde, and the work of women artists in pre-revolutionary Russia. She is the co-author, with Dr Natalia Murray, of Two Women Patrons of the Russian Avant-Garde (London: Unicorn, 2021), a book that explores the formation of the Russian art market and the activities of the first private galleries in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
