Smokin Roses Presents: Folk in the Footlights ft Emily Fraser, Melody Coles and Elliot Porter

14 June @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

£10

Folk in the Footlights is a brand new folk night for Cambridge in 2024, in association with The Cambridge Union.

Bringing the illustrious history of the Footlights and Cambridge’s famous folk scene together, every 6 weeks we will present 3 of the area’s finest acoustic music acts, with some touring acts as well.

For June we have an enchanting line-up for your listening pleasure featuring Emily Fraser, Elliot Porter and Melody Coles.

Tickets are £10 from our website and the link below:

Emily Fraser:

The genre in which singer/songwriter Emily Fraser falls into is hard to place. Having grown up in a creative environment, her father a musician and mother an artist, from a young age Emily witnessed how one could be expressive with creativity and that this did not need to be confined to one particular form or style.
With a phenomenal range and agility in her voice – from rich and sensuous earthiness to the resonating and hauntingly ethereal – paired with her delicate touch on guitar, she has an ability to completely transfix; leaving an audience silent, hairs standing on the end.
Emily’s writing is deeply personal, her lyrics form direct and intimate messages, chronicling the moment. The candour of her lyrics reveal a wistful astuteness, exploring the struggles to reconcile her thoughts, feelings and actions.
Singing with a stirring reflective melancholy, that lays bare a guileless vulnerability, Emily’s voice has the power to pull you through an array of emotions, embracing you in a fully cathartic experience.

Melody Coles:

Cambridge based Singer-songwriter Melody Coles has lived and breathed the music scene for a number of years now.

Having sung at Thatchers Sessions presented by Huw Stephens, supported a number of respected folk acts including Megson, and gained past radio support from BBC Introducing and Radio 1, she’s enjoying being back at it after having her two children.

She’s releasing new music for 2024, and is ready to take to the stage with her folk infused, emotive, storytelling songs.

Elliot Porter:

Inspired by songwriters including Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Neil Young, Elliot Porters songs have an earthy feel with hints of folk, country and emotive elements, bringing his influences to the fore in his own distinctive style.

Elliot toured the UK in 2016 and 17, and has supported the likes of Toploader, Christina Martin, Narina Pallot, Alabama 3 and Mo Kenney. He also secured radio play from Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 with his single ‘Keep Going’.

2019 saw Elliot release his debut album ‘Lanes’ produced by Dave Gerard (Gerard and The Watchmen/Universal) and featuring Alex Reeves (Elbow) after a successful crowd funding campaign. The album release will be followed by a full band tour and Festival appearances across Europe and the UK in 2021 (Postponed from 2020 due to Covid-19).

During the Covid lockdown, Elliot was busy raising money for NHS Charities together with is cover of Frank Turner’s ‘Be More Kind’ featuring 18 artists including Jess Greenfield (Noel Gallagher), Daisy Chute (All Angels), Tom Wright (Ronan Keating/Albert Lee) and even an appearance from Frank himself!
The song has received critical acclaim and radio play from BBC Essex, Cambridge and BBC London with Gaby Roslin.

Post Covid he goes from strength to strength with new releases ‘Normal People(2021)’ and ‘Another You(2022)’ received with great reviews and new music due in 2024.
