SUMMARY:London Philharmonic Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Edward Gardner has a special affinity with Tchaikovsky – LPO’s performances of his symphonies with Gardner at the helm are alive with what the conductor calls Tchaikovsky’s ‘deep passion\, loss\, and memories of happiness’. \n\n\nThe epic symphonic portrait of Byron’s brooding\, wandering hero Manfred contains some of Tchaikovsky’s most vibrant and characterful music. \nOf the recent concerto Mark Simpson wrote for her\, Nicola Benedetti said ‘everything has been poured into it’ and The Strad lavished it with praise\, calling it ‘immediately arresting’. Simpson’s latest concerto promises to be equally thrilling. Tamara Stefanovich\, one of the world’s great interpreters of 20th- and 21st-century piano music\, brings this brand new piece to life.

SUMMARY:Cambridge Ragas Resonance of Sitar Slide Guitar and Tabla
DESCRIPTION:KalaSudha presents Cambridge Ragas: Resonance of Sitar\, Slide Guitar\, and Tabla at Cambridge Junction on Sunday 20 September 2026. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the performance runs from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM BST. The concert brings sitar\, Indian slide guitar\, Brij Veena and tabla together in a two-part programme of Hindustani classical music. Advance tickets cost £30 and tickets on the door cost £35. Tickets and full event information are available from the KalaSudha event page: https://kalasudha.com/event/cambridge-ragas-resonance-sitar-slide-guitar-and-tabla \nThe first half opens with Ustad Mehboob Nadeem on sitar\, accompanied by Dr Sam Evans on tabla. Mehboob Nadeem is known for a clear command of the sitar and a performance style grounded in North Indian raga tradition. Sam Evans brings his experience as a performer\, researcher and teacher of tabla. Their recital develops through melodic exploration and rhythmic dialogue\, giving listeners time to hear how a raga takes shape before the music gathers pace. \nAfter the interval\, Pandit Debasis Chakroborty performs on Indian slide guitar and Brij Veena with Ustad Akram Khan on tabla. Debasis Chakroborty returns to Cambridge Junction for a third year. His instruments combine sustained\, vocal-like tone with the detail of plucked strings\, creating a distinctive setting for raga improvisation. Akram Khan represents the Ajrada gharana and a family tabla tradition that spans seven generations. His playing supports the unfolding melody while bringing its own rhythmic ideas to the exchange. \nIndian classical music builds each performance in the moment. The musicians work within the melodic character of a raga and the rhythmic cycle of a taal\, responding to one another as the piece develops. Listeners can expect spacious opening passages\, measured elaboration and faster exchanges between strings and tabla. The programme offers an accessible introduction for first-time listeners while giving experienced audiences the depth and focus of a full concert presentation. \nThe contrast between the sessions gives the programme its shape. The sitar leads the first half with curved phrases\, ringing resonance and a close exchange with tabla. The slide guitar and Brij Veena bring a more sustained line after the interval. Across both sets\, the tabla moves between support\, response and solo detail\, so the rhythmic structure remains audible as the music expands. \nCambridge Junction is on Clifton Way\, Cambridge\, CB1 7GX\, close to Cambridge railway station and Cambridge Leisure Park. The event forms part of Kala Festival 2026. Unauthorised filming and photography are not permitted\, and mobile phones should remain unused during the performance. Anyone with access requirements or questions can contact KalaSudha before the event.
