SUMMARY:Cambridge Ragas Resonance of Sitar Slide Guitar and Tabla
DESCRIPTION:KalaSudha presents Cambridge Ragas: Resonance of Sitar\, Slide Guitar\, and Tabla at Cambridge Junction on Sunday 20 September 2026. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the performance runs from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM BST. The concert brings sitar\, Indian slide guitar\, Brij Veena and tabla together in a two-part programme of Hindustani classical music. Advance tickets cost £30 and tickets on the door cost £35. Tickets and full event information are available from the KalaSudha event page: https://kalasudha.com/event/cambridge-ragas-resonance-sitar-slide-guitar-and-tabla \nThe first half opens with Ustad Mehboob Nadeem on sitar\, accompanied by Dr Sam Evans on tabla. Mehboob Nadeem is known for a clear command of the sitar and a performance style grounded in North Indian raga tradition. Sam Evans brings his experience as a performer\, researcher and teacher of tabla. Their recital develops through melodic exploration and rhythmic dialogue\, giving listeners time to hear how a raga takes shape before the music gathers pace. \nAfter the interval\, Pandit Debasis Chakroborty performs on Indian slide guitar and Brij Veena with Ustad Akram Khan on tabla. Debasis Chakroborty returns to Cambridge Junction for a third year. His instruments combine sustained\, vocal-like tone with the detail of plucked strings\, creating a distinctive setting for raga improvisation. Akram Khan represents the Ajrada gharana and a family tabla tradition that spans seven generations. His playing supports the unfolding melody while bringing its own rhythmic ideas to the exchange. \nIndian classical music builds each performance in the moment. The musicians work within the melodic character of a raga and the rhythmic cycle of a taal\, responding to one another as the piece develops. Listeners can expect spacious opening passages\, measured elaboration and faster exchanges between strings and tabla. The programme offers an accessible introduction for first-time listeners while giving experienced audiences the depth and focus of a full concert presentation. \nThe contrast between the sessions gives the programme its shape. The sitar leads the first half with curved phrases\, ringing resonance and a close exchange with tabla. The slide guitar and Brij Veena bring a more sustained line after the interval. Across both sets\, the tabla moves between support\, response and solo detail\, so the rhythmic structure remains audible as the music expands. \nCambridge Junction is on Clifton Way\, Cambridge\, CB1 7GX\, close to Cambridge railway station and Cambridge Leisure Park. The event forms part of Kala Festival 2026. Unauthorised filming and photography are not permitted\, and mobile phones should remain unused during the performance. Anyone with access requirements or questions can contact KalaSudha before the event. SUMMARY:Myriad by Architects of Air
DESCRIPTION:This August Architects of Air bring their stunning luminarium to Jesus Green. Called Myriad this unique inflatable creation is the 32nd Luminarium and the newest from Architects of Air. It stretches over 900 square feet and features an intricate labyrinth of tunnels and domes to explore. Running between Tuesday 25 and Sunday 30 August\, Myriad opens at 11am and visiting slots will run until 5pm\, each visit lasts 25 minutes. \nTaking its inspiration from the night sky\, the design of Myriad makes it appear with an onion-like form and carries a theme of ‘light from above’. The domes of the structure are opaque with the finials at the top made of translucent material casting light and colour into the interior creating a beautiful\, relaxing and reflective experience.

SUMMARY:The Struggle for Light
DESCRIPTION:10am – 6pm \n\n\nPrice\nFree with normal Garden admission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Struggle for Light is a powerful new immersive exhibition created by The Glasshouse Artists\, a community of artists brought together by Annabel Lee in collaboration with the University Herbarium and the Cambridge University Botanic Garden Learning Team. \nInspired by the remarkable but little-known work of 19th-century artist\, writer and scientist Mary Merrifield\, the exhibition explores creativity\, resilience and the challenges women have faced in pursuing artistic careers across generations. \nThe project began with a simple question: Why did Mary Merrifield choose to paint and collect seaweed? Looking to her pioneering ideas on women’s freedom and dress reform\, The Glasshouse Artists imagine seaweed as a symbol of movement\, possibility and liberation – a striking contrast to the social constraints placed on Victorian women. Merrifield’s determination to balance artistic ambition with domestic expectations continues to resonate with the experiences of women artists today. \nStep inside an atmospheric Victorian sitting room\, reimagined through sculpture\, lighting\, sound and specially commissioned creative writing. At the heart of the installation\, large transparent tanks filled with aquatic plants evoke the Botanic Garden’s glasshouses and waterways. Reaching towards the light\, the plants weave around sculpted figures representing Mary Merrifield\, her descendants and generations of women artists\, creating a powerful visual metaphor for perseverance\, growth and the pursuit of creative recognition. \nThroughout the space\, botanical imagery appears in unexpected places – from hidden details woven into wallpaper and textiles to striking artworks displayed around the room – inviting visitors to look closely and uncover the many layers of the story. \nCreated by The Glasshouse Artists\, the exhibition celebrates the power of creativity\, collaboration and community\, while shining a light on the stories of women whose artistic contributions deserve to be better known. \nThe Struggle for Light exhibition will take place in the Syndicate Room in Brookside and is free with normal Garden admission.
