Flood alerts in place across Cambridgeshire after heavy rainfall

There are flood alerts in place tonight (Wednesday) across Cambridgeshire after today’s heavy rainfall.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service issued a warning earlier today for heavy rain in the area throughout the day.

According to the Met Office, there is more rain to fall on the county tomorrow, which could lead to more issues as rain falls on saturated ground.

The Environment Agency Anglia earlier posted a tweet saying: “We have issued a flood warning for Alconbury Brook at Hamerton, Alconbury Weston and Alconbury.

“Flooding of property is expected from 6:30pm.”

Here are the current flood alerts out across Cambridgeshire.

Red flood warning

Alconbury Brook at Hamerton, Alconbury Weston and Alconbury

River levels are rising at the Hamerton river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall.

As a consequence, the Environment Agency advised that flooding of property was expected from 6.30pm.

“We expect flooding to affect Hamerton, High Street, Willow Farm Close, Hamerton Road, Spires End and North Road in Alconbury Weston, Great North Road, Mill Road, Brookside, Sharps Lane, High Street and Maple End in Alconbury, and Huntingdon Racecourse Further rainfall is forecast over the next 8 hours,” they said, adding that river levels were expected to continue rising throughout Wednesday night.

“Please avoid contact with flood water and move possession and valuables off the ground or to safety. Please call 999 if you are in immediate danger.

“Property owners with individual property resilience are advised to install it now.”

Yellow flood alert

The Environment Agency says that flooding may affect these areas.

They explain: “Our incident response staff are liaising with emergency services.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

Bin Brook in Cambridgeshire

“We expect flooding to affect Bin Brook at Newnham in Cambridge. Further rainfall is forecast over the next 6 hours.

“Our incident response staff are liaising with emergency services.”

Bourn Brook in Cambridgeshire

“We expect flooding to affect Bourn Brook from Caxton to Comberton.

“Further rainfall is forecast over the next 6 hours. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

Cottenham Lode in Cambridgeshire

“We expect flooding to affect Cottenham Lode including Oakington Brook, Wash Pit Brook and Beck Brook. Further rainfall is forecast over the next 8 hours.

“We expect river levels to rise throughout Wednesday night.”

Lower River Cam in Cambridgeshire

“River levels are falling at the Dernford river gauge. Levels will begin to rise again as further heavy rainfall is expected over the next 12 hours.

“Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected. We expect flooding to affect River Cam from Stapleford to Waterbeach.”

River Rhee in Central Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire

“River levels are falling at the Wimpole river gauge. Levels will begin to rise again as further heavy rainfall is expected over the next 12 hours.

“Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected. We expect flooding to affect River Rhee from Guilden Morden to Haslingfield.”
