Live: Cambridge bids emotional farewell to beloved U’s fan Simon Dobbin

The funeral for the much-loved Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin will be held today following his tragic death last month.

Simon, a dad of three, was left with profound injuries and permanent brain damage after his head was stamped on during a 90-second attack by a group of thugs at a football match in 2015.

Sadly, on October 21, Simon died from his injuries.

Known to many as ‘Dobbo’, his funeral is set to take place in Mildenhall today, where he lived with wife Nicole.

While attending an away game in Southend, Essex for his beloved Cambridge United, Simon was set upon by a group of men who launched a violent attack.

The attack left Simon unable to walk, talk or control his movements.

Simon’s wife, Nicole, has previously complained about the length of the sentences handed to the 13 men who ambushed Simon after the match on March 21.

Of the 25 men who reportedly set upon Simon, nine were convicted for violent disorder. They were sentenced on July 17 2017.

Three others were convicted at the same trial of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and received jail sentences between three, and two and a half years.

A thirteenth man was convicted of assisting an offender and admitted possessing a pepper spray. He was given an 18-month sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work.
