Artist Statement

Melissa Pierce Murray’s sculptural practice explores ways meaning emerges through encounters between people, materials and place. Often participatory or performative, her work brings together sculpture, movement, narrative and dialogue to create experiences that are both inviting and unsettling. She frequently collaborates with artists, scientists and researchers, and works across a range of media, including stone, steel, bronze, plaster, glass and ice. Informed by interests in literature, physics, embodied experience and nature, her practice investigates how objects, materials and exchange can deepen our awareness of our place in the world.
